The Bergen County SPCA investigates complaints of
suspected animal neglect and animal within Bergen
County.
Each county has a branch of the SPCA to investigate
complaints within that area. If you are unable to
locate the particular SPCA in your area, please call
your local police department and ask them who handles
animal cruelty complaints for your area. The local
Police Department will be able to provide you with that
information.
The SPCA is a humane law enforcement agency that handles
animal cruelty complaints relating to the mistreatment
of animals. If your complaint relates to a vicious
animal or an animal causing a disturbance in your
neighborhood, then that complaint should be filed with
your local police department.
Animal neglect or abuse can take many forms.
Here are some examples:

An animal is being physically struck or beaten

An animal is being physically maimed, cut or
tortured

An animal being used as “bait” (usually related to
dog fighting)

No food and/or water is provided to the animal

Lack of proper shelter from rain, snow, extreme cold
or extreme heat

Abandonment of an animal

An
animal being neglected and/or left in dangerous
conditions, including being left in a car on an
extremely hot or extremely cold day.
When making a complaint:

Be ready to give your name, address, and telephone
number. You can make an anonymous complaint;
however some cases require a witness in order to
proceed

Give the name and address of the person(s) about
whom you are making the complaint

Give a full description of the complaint along with
dates and specifics of the nature of the neglect or
abuse

If you know of other witnesses to the neglect or
abuse, please provide their names, addresses, and
telephone numbers

investigate, since it may require several visits. The
assigned officer will call you to let you know that the
